Recreational in Casper, Wyoming
If you took a spot, geographically speaking,
about the same distance between Denver, CO., Boise, ID., Salt Lake
City UT., and Billings MT., Casper would be that place. Located
alongside I -25 in the shadow of the 3000' Casper Mountain, this
city of 46,000 in Natrona County is more than the center of the
state on the map. It has the only international airport, a large
and thriving mall, and a strong and growing downtown and is the
communications and entertainment heart of the state. Add to this
a booming coal bed methane industry in the area and Casper is facing
a resurgence not seem since the 1980's oil boom.
All the prosperity means that the people of Casper
are looking for exciting ways to spend their increasing leisure
time. For a relatively small town, there is a wide range of both
indoor and outdoor recreation activities. Within a short driving
distance of the city opportunities to go hunting, fishing,
skiing, boating, water skiing, camping, hiking and climbing abound.
Nearby Casper Mountain, Alcova Lake, Hogadon Ski Area and Medicine
Bow National Forest all offer a wide choice of both fun and strenuous
activities for the outdoor enthusiast.
For those more suited to less strenuous pastimes,
many activities are available around the city to fill in those long
hot summer or snowy, wintry days. In summer the new Casper Rockies
semi- pro baseball team has begun their first season at the new
Mike Lansing Field, a municipal swimming pool, numerous tennis courts,
several golf courses and free band concerts in Washington Park on
Thursdays await the visitor. The historical Ft. Caspar, recently
renovated is a most interactive way to learn of Casper's colorful
past with costumed soldiers enacting a living tableau daily. Scenes
from the constant battles between the pioneers and local Indians
spring to life. The Casper Events Center continually hosts many
different types of entertainment from rodeos to rock concerts and
even antique road shows. Downtown, the Painted Past Living History
players re enact life in the 1800's and bring the real Wild West
to life right down to the painted ladies of saloons and the outlaws
of the range. True western entertainment can be enjoyed while watching
the world famous Casper Drum and Bugle Corps as they march to time
honored tunes.
Fall and winter days can easily be filled with
a great selection of fun things to do. Perhaps enjoy an arena football
game with the Wyoming Cavalry, a days skiing at Hogadon, snowmobiling
on Casper Mountain or a day browsing the Casper Planetarium or the
Nicolaysen Art Museum. There
is always lots to do in Casper - so come on out and enjoy some real
western fun!
