Things to do in Jackson, Wyoming
The Jackson Hole area has many events offering
a wide variety of interests every season. They range from specialty
events focused on recreational opportunities to western and art
festivals.
Children and adults alike love rodeos. Like most
western towns Jackson features a summer rodeo at the Teton County
Fairgrounds where families can enjoy everything from bucking broncos
to the antics of clowns.
For tourists wanting to have summer's last "best
of the west" fling, the town features Old West Days on Memorial
Day. It pretty much covers the territory, including a mountain-man
get together, Indian dances, a barbecue, and cowboy poetry. The
latter grows in popularity every year in the west.
For classical music lovers, one of this country's
most renowned music festivals is held each year at Teton Village.
The world's best-known musicians and symphony orchestras perform
for appreciative audiences from June through August. Conductor Ling
Tung also brings innovative chamber groups and solo performers to
the area. This event has gained international renown over the years.
For people unable to make it to Jackson, National Public Radio often
features festival concerts on its "Performance Today"
program.
Winter brings torchlight ski parades during the
holiday season at Jackson Hole Ski Resort, Snow King, and Grand
Targhee. If you always wanted to be in Alaska for the Iditarod Dog
Sled Race, a shorter trip to Wyoming can give you a feel for the
incredible stamina of sled dogs. This race begins in Jackson and
goes in stages through a number of towns, finally winding up in
Alpine. It is 10 days long, and takes place in February. It attracts
the world's best known dog sled runners with their well-trained
animals.
In Jackson's town square perhaps the most unique
attraction is the elk antler arch which brings in its fair share
of antler counters. In winter it is decorated with Christmas lights.
If you want to build your own version, try showing up in May for
the area elk antler auction which is attended by people from all
over the world. Boy scouts gather the antlers for the auction and
the proceeds from the event are used to help with the winter feeding
of the area's elk herd. As you can see, The Jackson Hole area has
events to pique the interest of nearly every traveler.
