Polo in the Bighorn Mountains
If
you would like to experience a polo game like no where else in the
world, treat yourself to a polo match at the Big Horn Equestrian
Center located just minutes from the historic town of Sheridan,
Wyoming.
Nestled against the Bighorn foothills are 3
perfectly manicured emerald green polo fields which provide the
stage for hundreds of thundering hoofs every Wednesday, Friday and
Sunday from Memorial Day until the famous Don King Days Rodeo of
Labor Day weekend.
The
Big Horn Polo Club is the oldest polo club west of the Mississippi
and has been active since the Calvary days of the old west. Although
most cowboys were riding the range on quarter horses, the US Calvary
preferred the huge heart and comfortable ride of the American Thoroughbred.
Since thoroughbreds are the popular choice of most polo players,
it was only natural that these military men would create a polo
field out in the middle of the wild, wild west to play the sport
of kings!
Many Wyoming and Montana ranchers of that time
began breeding thoroughbreds specifically for the Calvary, and thoroughbred
breeding is still popular in this area today.
The
Big Horn Polo Club has an excellent reputation for producing strong
talented stock, well rounded and unspoiled from herding cattle and
calving when the summer months of polo are over. Every year buyers
from Florida, Texas and California fly into this local polo club
to purchase these talented and powerful animals.
There is no admission to the polo matches (except
for the Don King Rodeo weekend) and tourists are always welcome
to come and watch. Bring a blanket and pack a picnic lunch to enjoy
while you relax on the carpets of grass or visit the club house
for a drink or a soda on Sunday afternoons.
