Snowmobiling in Yellowstone Park, Wyoming

Yellowstone Park - land of the legendary Old Faithful geyser, boiling hot mud pots,bears, elk, wolves, bison and the memorable smell of sulpher! Over 3,000,000 visitors a summer drive the roads of this breathtaking corner of northwestWyoming marveling over one of the most spectacular, naturally beautiful areas of this planet! It has been said that at least one third of the population of the United States will have visited the park at least once during their lifetime.

In 1872 the United States government, in their infinite wisdom and foresight, saw fit to turn this majestic corner of what was not even a full-fledged state at the time, into the first national park. Some 2,200,000 acres (900,000 hectares) are now perhaps part of the most popular tourist attraction in the whole country. It has been described as the biggest wildlife sanctuary in the world. In 1988 a fire of mammoth proportions raged through the park burning about 800,000 acres, 36% of the whole park. In the ensuing thirteen years, incredible re-growth has occurred and the visitors still keep coming!

Although most visitors make the trip during the summer, winter in Yellowstone Park is nothing short of magnificent! Visitors come to enjoy a variety of winter activities from skiing, snowshoeing, traveling in a snow coach and of course, snowmobiling. West Yellowstone is considered by many to be the snowmobiling capital of the world! In March the World Snowmobiling Expo is held there and thousands arrive to competeand see what is hot for the coming year. This small town is the headquarters for an extensive series of trails that crisscross the park and surrounding land. The West Yellowstone Trail System has about 2500 miles of groomed and well-marked trails. Combined with the 300 miles of trails inside the park, it is truly a snowmobiler's version of paradise! Miles of hill climbing and thousands of acres of fresh powder tempt riders of all levels and experience. Sometimes between 1,500 and 2,000 snowmobiles a day can be found racing across the winter wonderland.

Snowmobiling in the park is a thrilling pastime, but it does require much planning, attention to safety requirements and a valid drivers license. Machine and equipment rentals are available at various locations. Restaurants, rest stops and rental locations are available throughout the park. Fuel stops are to be found at Old Faithful, Canyon, Fishing Bridge and Mammoth Hot Springs so running out of gas should not spoil an otherwise perfect winter vacation!
