Snowmobiling in Yellowstone
Park, Wyoming
Yellowstone Park - land of the
legendary Old Faithful geyser, boiling hot mud pots, bears, elk,
wolves, bison and the memorable smell of sulpher! Over 3,000,000
visitors a summer drive the roads of this breathtaking corner of
northwestWyoming
marveling over one of the most spectacular, naturally beautiful
areas of this planet! It has been said that at least one third of
the population of the United States will have visited the park at
least once during their lifetime.
In 1872 the United States government,
in their infinite wisdom and foresight, saw fit to turn this majestic
corner of what was not even a full-fledged state at the time, into
the first national park. Some 2,200,000 acres (900,000 hectares)
are now perhaps part of the most popular tourist attraction in the
whole country. It has been described as the biggest wildlife sanctuary
in the world. In 1988 a fire of mammoth proportions raged through
the park burning about 800,000 acres, 36% of the whole park. In
the ensuing thirteen years, incredible re-growth has occurred and
the visitors still keep coming!
Although
most visitors make the trip during the summer, winter in Yellowstone
Park is nothing short of magnificent! Visitors come to enjoy a variety
of winter activities from skiing, snowshoeing, traveling in a snow
coach and of course, snowmobiling. West Yellowstone is considered
by many to be the snowmobiling capital of the world! In March the
World Snowmobiling Expo is held there and thousands arrive to competeand
see what is hot for the coming year. This small town is the headquarters
for an extensive series of trails that crisscross the park and surrounding
land. The West Yellowstone Trail System has about 2500 miles of
groomed and well-marked trails. Combined with the 300 miles of trails
inside the park, it is truly a snowmobiler's version of paradise!
Miles of hill climbing and thousands of acres of fresh powder tempt
riders of all levels and experience. Sometimes between 1,500 and
2,000 snowmobiles a day can be found racing across the winter wonderland.
Snowmobiling in the park is a thrilling pastime,
but it does require much planning, attention to safety requirements
and a valid drivers license. Machine and equipment rentals are available
at various locations. Restaurants, rest stops and rental locations
are available throughout the park. Fuel stops are to be found at
Old Faithful, Canyon, Fishing Bridge and Mammoth Hot Springs so
running out of gas should not spoil an otherwise perfect winter
vacation!
